About 500 km north of Mumbai lies Ahmedabad, a city founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah (1411-1453 AD.) of Gujarat, who also made it his capital. By early 17th century, Ahmedabad had become one of the finest and richest cities of western India, which prompted Sir Thomas Roe to describe it as "a goodly city as large as London". Its strategic position in being accessible from the sea, its rich and flourishing textile looms famous for spinning out yards and yards of exquisite cotton, silk and gold thread, made it an important trading centre of the middle ages. It was the Manchester of India beautiful, vast, charming and prosperous. The 18th century, however, saw a sharp decline of the city when the Marathas raided and ravaged it. But it returned to prominence in the 20th century |
