Amritsar, or the city of the Golden Temple is situated on the north-western border of the state of Punjab. This 400 year old city has been an important centre of Sikh history, culture and tradition. |

| The
city was founded in 1579 by Guru Ramdas, the fourth guru of the Sikhs. The name Amritsar means `a pool of nectar', the pool beside which the famous Golden Temple is situated. This is the holiest of Sikh shrines, and pilgrims of all castes and creeds come to pay their respects here. The temple was totally ravaged in 1761 during Ahmed Shah's invasion, but it was rebuilt in 1764 and gold plated in the year 1802. Amritsar is also commercially and industrially important. ACCESS Amritsar is connected by air, rail and road. PLACES OF INTREST The Golden Temple; the Jallianwala Bagh where the bloody massacre of innocent Indian men, women and children by the British took place on April 13, 1919; the Central Sikh Museum; and the Durgiana Mandir. EXCURSIONS Hari-ke-Pattan is a beautiful scenic picnic spot at the union of the Beas and Sutlej rivers; Gobindwal Sahib (30 km); Taran Taran (22 km) where there is a gurudwara in the Mughal style; and Amanat Khan, a mosque with inscriptions in Persian.
