Cuttack

Cuttack was the capital of the state from medieval ages up to the end of British rule. The town is almost an island, being surrounded by rivers.

Built in the 11th century, the place is bustling with activity and is a great shopping centre, specially for the famous silver filigree work.

The Cuttack district also has temples worth visiting. The Simhanath Temple reflects the influence of the old and new experiments and has images of the Shaiva, Shakta and Vaishnava cults of Hinduism.

The Madhava Temple built in 13th century, has the image of the four - armed Vishnu, and a small image of Durga.

In the centre of Cuttack is Kadam Rasul, a Muslim shrine, said to contain some holy relics of Prophet Muhammad, brought from Mecca.
