Kohima

Driving through hills and fields covered with rich green grass and masses of beautiful flowers on the way from Dimapur to the capital city of Kohima is a unique experience. The city which stands at a height of 1,500 metres, came into the limelight during the Second World War when the British Indian forces were able to push back the Japanese and the INA of Subhash Chandra Bose from here. The old village of Kohima overlooks the modern city.

Known as Barra Basti, the village is a living example of the unique Naga culture and their way of life.

PLACES OF INTREST

The War Cemetery with its 1,200 epitaphs in memory of those who fought with the Japanese during World War II; and the Museum which contains some beautiful life size images of men, women, birds, animals and scenes from tribal life. The Naga villages also make for an interesting visit.

EXCURSIONS

Japvo Peak (12 km) is the highest peak of Nagaland, rising to 3,014 metres above sea level. Phek (145 km) a picturesque town is also a storehouse of numerous varieties of flowers. Zunheboto, 150 km from Kohima is the home of the Semas.

ACCESS

Dimapur (74 km) is nearest airport which is airlinked with Calcutta. Dimapur also serves as the nearest railhead. By road, Kohima is accessed by National Highway 39.
