Maheshwar

Situated on the banks ofNarmada, this temple town has reference in the epics of Ramayan and Mahabharat. The ancient glory of Maheshwar was revived by the Holker queen, Rani Ahilyabai of Indore. Today, the mighty fort complex and the temples of Maheshwar are characterised by their quiet beauty. Another attraction of this town is the Meheshwari sarees, renowned throughout India for their unique weaves.

Nearest airport is Indore (91 km), connected with Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal and Gwalior. Nearest railheads are Barwaha (39 km), Khandwa (110 km), Indore (91 km) and Mhow on the Western Railway. Regular buses are available from Barwaha, Khandwa, Dhar and Dhamnod.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Rajgaddi and Rajwada: A lifesize statue of Rani Ahilyabai sits on a throne in the Rajgaddi within the Fort complex. Also within the complex is an exquisite, small shrine which is the starting point of the ancient Dussehra ceremony is carried out even today.

Ghats: Peshwa Ghat, Fanase Ghat and Ahilya Ghat line the river Narmada. Temples: The temples of Maheshwar are distinguished by their carved overhanging balconies and their intricately worked doorways.
