The history and culture of this holy town revolves around the legends of Lord Krishna's childhood. The capital of Brij Bhoomi, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, Mathura was a famous centre of art and culture in ancient times and received patronage from Emperor Ashoka and later Emperor Kanishka. Located 58 km from Agra, Mathura is also important for its colourful and jubilant celebration of festivals like Holi, Hariyali Teej and Janmashtami. This town is strewn with scores of temples, big and small, the most important of which are Shri Krishna Bhoomi, Dwarkadeesh temple and the Gita Mandir.
