NagarjunkondaOne of the most important Buddhist centres of the 2nd century B.C. and the 3rd century A.D., the town of Nagarjunakonda got its name from the celebrated philosopher and Buddhist monk, Nagarjuna. |
Excavations have revealed the presence of beautiful stupas, monasteries and sculptures, depicting the life of the Buddha. Tools, believed to be of the palaeolithic and neolithic ages, have also been discovered at the site. These have been preserved in a museum specially designed as a Buddhist vihara, atop a hill. The Nagarjunasagar Multipurpose Project stands on the site now. It is one of the largest masonry constructions in the world and is believed to be the world's third largest artificial lake. ACCESS |
