OrchhaOrchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput chieftain Rudra Pratap who chose this stretch of land along the river Betwa as an ideal site for his capital. Much of the rich legacy in stone of this city has survived to the present day. The Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace crowned by graceful chhatis offers a spectacular view of soaring temple spires and cenotaphs. Some of the finest expressions of the Bundela School of painting are found in the Laxminarayan Temple, where the murals enliven the walls and ceilings with a variety of religious and secular themes. ACCESS Nearest airports are Gwalior (120 km) and Khajuraho (178 km). Jhansi (19 km) is the most convenient railhead and is on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai main lines.
