Ujjain

Ujjain's origin is attributed to the mythological legend of Sagar Manthan (churning of the primordial ocean to discover the pot of nectar). The story goes that after the nectar was discovered, the gods and the demons were engaged in a chase in a bid to be the first to have the nectar and so attain immortality. During this chase a drop of the nectar spilled and fell on Ujjain, thus making the city sacred. A very holy city for Hindus, Ujjain - originally called Avantika according to Hindu scriptures - is a site for the massive triennial Kumbh Mela.
