Almora

A charming mountain resort of the Himalayas, Almora is perched atop a 5 Km. long saddle-shaped ridge of the Kashaya Hill. Salubrious climate, colourful valleys and enchanting view of the snow covered peaks are all characteristic of this picturesque resort. Almora was founded in 1560 A.D. by Raja Kalyan of the Chand Dynasty. Traces of the old fort, wooden,



houses with carved facades and homes with tradtional murals are still found here. Almora is situated at a distance of 443 kms. from Delhi and 120 Kms from Nainital.

ACCESS

The nearest airport is Pantnagar, around 127 km. from Almora. Kathagodam, 90 kms, is the nearest railhead which connects Almora with Lucknow, Delhi and Howrah. Regular bus services are available from Nainital, Delhi, Pithoragarh, Kathagodam.

EXCURSIONS

Bageshwar (99 kms.): This pilgrim town is an important centre for Shiva worshippers. Baijnath (71 kms.): Situated at an elevation of 1125 mts. the temple complex here was constructed by the Katyuri kings. Binsar (30 kms.): Once the summer capital of the Chand Rajas (7 th to 8 th centuries), Binsar is one of the most scenic spots in the Kumaon Himalyas and a well acclaimed hill resort. Binsar hills offer an excellent view of Almora town, kumaon Hills and the greater Himalayas. The main attraction of Binsar is the majestic view of the Himalayas. Gananath (47 kms.): is famous for its cave and the Shiva temple. Gwalakot (26 kms.): This land mass bears an uncanny resemblance to peninsular India. Jageshwar (34 kms.): is counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country. Katarmal (17 kms.): is renowned for an 800 years old sun temple. Ranikhet (49 kms.): or The Queen's Field is a popular tourist resort from where one gets an awe-inspiring view of the majestic Himalayas. A cantonment of immense charm, Ranikhet was selected as a hill station for British troops and a cantorement was established in 1869.
