A major tourist attraction in Alleppey is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race organised in August every year. The Snakeboats, unique to Kerala, vie with each other to win the coveted trophy. Alleppey is also famous for the manufacture of coir yarn, coir mat and mattings.

The nearest airport is Cochin, 64 km.Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is 159 km .

Alleppey has recently been linked to Cochin by rail. Some trains link Alleppey to cities like Chennai and Bokaro. The Alleppey Railway Station is 5 km away from the central bus stand and the boat jetty.

Alleppey is on the NH 47 highway and is connected to all important towns in South India.
