One of the oldest cities in India, Allahabad was bestowed with the status of Tirth Raj or the king of pilgrimages by Lord Brahma, the creator in the Hindu Trinity. He is said to have performed the `Prakrista Yagna' here at the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Allahabad was founded by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1575 AD who also built a fort at the point of confluence of the three rivers. This city boasts the Allahabad University, one of the oldest in modern India. |

PLACES OF INTEREST Sangam : The site of important fairs, it is the point of confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Fort : Built in 1575 AD by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, it holds many a tourist attractions like the Ashok Pillar, Saraswati Koop and Rani Mahal (Palace of Jodha Bai). Permission for entry has to be obtained beforehand as the fort is under army administration. Temples: This holy city has a host of temples, like the Patalpuri, Hanuman temple, Mankameshwar, Alopi Devi and the Veni Madhav temple are a few of them.
