One of the greenest and loveliest regions of India, Assam is the largest of the north- eastern states. Covering an area 78,525 sq. km, it is connected to the rest of the country by a narrow strip of land running to the north of Bangladesh. Recent archaeo-logical findings have revealed that Assamese culture and civilization which comprises a mosaic of various races and tribes goes back toprehistoric times. |

The Mahabharata, too, refers to various kings of Assam, while the state's traditional capital, Guwahati, is believed to be the flourishing ancient city of Pragjyotishpur or "The eastern City of Astrology". For the wildlife enthusiast, Assam is indeed a paradise for the Kaziranga and Manas wildlife sanctuaries are the homes of a variety of animals and birds including the rare one-horned rhinoceros.

Other attractions for the naturalists are Assam's rich variety of flora including the profusion of rare orchids which lie scattered all over the densely wooded forests. One of the longest and widest rivers in the country, the Brahmaputra or "the Son of Brahma". runs through Assam, feeding its canals and irrigating its fields. Flowing from east to west, the river has made Assam one of India's most fertile states, while abundant rainfall has created densely wooded forests and made Assam India's biggest timber-producing state. And of course, Assam's numerous and lovely tea gardens make the state one of the world's largest suppliers of fine tea. |
