Gaya

Ninety-two kilometers from Patna is Gaya, the abode of a celestial being known as Gaya. Gaya was empowered by Lord Vishnu to offer salvation to sinners on earth. And thus the town is believed to be second only to Banaras in sanctity. A pilgrimage centre of the Hindus, believers come here from far and near to offer funeral cakes or



`pintas' to relieve the souls of their dead ones from the eternal wheel of rebirth.The temple of Vishnupad is believed to have been built over the footprints of Lord Vishnu and the modern renovated temple was a gift, in 1787, from the Queen of Indore, Rani Ahilyabai.

ACCESS

Gaya is an important rail junction on the Eastern Railway.

EXCURSIONS

Brahma-Yoni, Ramshila, Pretshila (picturesque hills) Deo (20 km) famous for its Surya temple, Umga (an 18 - metre high stone temple built without mortar), Konch (6 km) Kurkihar (5 km), Kukkutapadagiri, the Barabar Caves (Buddhist rock-cut caves), Sasaram, and Bodhgaya.
