GuwahatiAssam's traditional capital Guwahati is
believed to be the ancient city of Pragjyotishpur founded by the legendary king Naraka.
The Chinese traveller Hieun Tsang, who visited Guwahati in the 7th century, showered
lavish praise on the city. Today, it is an important city which is a gateway not only to
Assam but also to the entire north-eastern part of the country. |
Guwahati is situated on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, and encircled by low green hills. The city abounds in temples, picnic spots, and museums. The Sri Kamakhya Temple, a famous shrine of Assam, is dedicated to goddess Kali. Dispur, the present capital of Assam, is a part of Guwahati. |
