HyderabadHyderabad, coupled with its twin city of Secunderabad is the southern counterpart of the erstwhile Muslim ruled northern cities of Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Delhi. Even to a casual visitor the city offers a taste of oriental glory, of Indo-Islamic culture and tradition. Hyderabad was founded in 1589 by the fourth Qutub Shahi king of Golconda for his love for a dancer who later became his queen Hyder Mahal. The city exudes an air of typical Muslim splendour under nawabs, the last of whom was one of the richest men in the world. |

Reminiscent of the splendid times gone by is the Charminar, a monument built in 1591 and still symbolic of the city. Next to the Charminar is one of the largest mosques in the world, the Mecca Masjid. This almost four centuries old (built in 1614) mosque can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers. The Golconda Fort, though now in ruins, was once a strong and massive fortress built at the site of the famous diamond mines of Golconda. Its amazing acoustical system allows the sound of a handclap to be heard right at its citadel some 200 feet high.Ingenious indeed was its system of water supply through laminated clay pipes and Persian wheels to cool the palace and the roof gardens. The Salar Jung museum contains 35,000 exhibits drawn from far and near.andhra pradesh, hyderabad, nizams of hyderabad, hyderabad capital of andhra pradesh, hyderabad's history, hyderabad's monuments, charminar, purraparthi, shopping in hyderabad |
