Jaipur
Jaipur was named after King Sawai Jai Singh II (1683-1743 A.D) who was famous as a brave warrior, a great scholar, a mathematician, an astronomer and a town planner Jaipur is the present capital of Rajasthan. It is also called the Pink City, and its planning and architecture is indeed remarkable. Wide streets, well-constructed houses and a general air of peace and quiet are the outstanding features of the city.
The wide avenues of the city divide it into near rectangles. When, towards evening, the setting sun lights up the pink buildings, the effect is almost magical.
The old city is encircled by a wall with seven gates and the Iswari Minar Swarga Sul, the "minaret piercing heaven" near the Tripoli Gate,
An eleven km drive north of Jaipur brings you to Amber with the royal palace atop a hill. The palace is in the form of a large fortress with massive thick walls and gateways. An image of Durga which was brought from Bengal by Akbar's brilliant general Raja Man Singh is seated within. The palace has a Diwan-i-Aam or Hall of Audience with a double row of columns and latticed galleries above.

Jaipur is well connected by air to all major cities in India.
Jaipur is linked by direct trains from Agra, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and some major cities of Rajasthan. The daily Pink City Express from Delhi is fast and convenient.
Rajasthan State Transport and ITDC have daily services between Jaipur and Delhi (306 km), Agra (320 km), Bharatpur (174 km), Bikaner (329 km), Kota/Bundi (245 km), Chittaurgarh (320 km), Sariska (105 km), Udaipur
(407 km), Jodhpur (340 km).

The Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds, the Jantar Mantar, the City Palace, the Central Museum, the Amber Palace, the Jaigarh Fort, the Ram Niwas Gardens and Sangarner which is famous for its hand made paper and block printing.

SHOPPING
Jaipur is a shopper's paradise where bazaars overflow with precious and semiprecious stones, brassware and exquisitely carved objects in ivory and marble. There are other colourful handicrafts, handwoven blankets, clay figurines, lac bangles, ceramics painted in blue and most fascinating of all, tie - and - dye on garments and bedspreads in elaborate patterns and vivid colours. Some well - known shops are Rajasthan Government Handicrafts Emporium on MI Road; Central Cottage Industries, MI road.
