Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram, the erstwhile an-cient capital of the Pallavas, is often called the Golden City of Temples. The town is about 76 km from Chennai and was earlier a meeting place of different cultures--the Cholas, the Vijayanagar kings, the Muslims and the British. It had been a centre of Tamil learning and culture for centuries. Kanchi is also equally famous for its handwoven silks. Handlooms work in small and large factories spinning out lengths and lengths of silk fit for kings. One can easily visit these cottage industrial units for shopping -- but watch out for the prices.
