Mandu

"Of all places in Hindustan none is more beautiful than Mandu after the rains," wrote Emperor Jahangir about Mandu, the City of Joy. It was built as a fortress and retreat by Raja Bhoj in the 10th century AD. Deep ravines and gorges cut into the sides of the plateau on which the fort stands. Although Mandu has been both a home and pleasure retreat for numerous kings and emperors, it is today remembered mainly for the love of the

poet - prince Baz Bahadur for his beautiful consort Rani Roopmati. The Rani's pavilion and the palace of her lover-poet-prince are indeed magnificent expressions of Afghan architecture. The Jahaz Mahal, built by the epicurean, Ghiyas-up-din, to house his harem, is flanked by lakes on two sides giving it the effect of a 'jahaz' or ship. The Hindola Mahal or the Swinging Palace has leaning walls and arches expertly and skilfully constructed.
