Meghalaya |
Meghalaya or "the abode of clouds" is a small Indian state surrounded by Assam and Bangladesh curving around its sides. Comprising an area of 22,429 sq. m of lush hilly terrain, Meghalaya is inhabited by the ancient Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hill tribes. |
The 21st state of India, Meghalaya was carved out of Assam as a separate state in 1972. The people are brave and are believed to be one of the oldest inhabitants of India. A favourite sport in which the Khasis excel is archery. Frequent competitions are organized by them to improve their skill and keep their forte alive. Nature, too, has been lavish here. True to its name, the state has a very high rainfall, and possesses one of the world's wettest place, Cherrapunjee, which receives 1,270 cm of rain annually. Rare varieties of orchids grow wild here, making Meghalaya a natural paradise. Numerous lakes, waterfalls and streams abound. An excellent water sports resort at Umiam is perhaps the first of its kind in India. It will have facilities for water-skiing, surfing and power-boat racing. Umiam is a lovely picnic spot good for anglers too. Hot sulphur springs at Jakrem are believed to possess effective therapeutic qualities. For those interested in wildlife, Meghalaya's Balpakram Sanctuary is a rich feast. |
