Mizoram |
Situated in the north-eastern corner of India, the union territory of Mizoram is flanked by Bangladesh and Tripura in the west, Myanmar (Burma) in the east and the south, and Assam and Manipur in the north. Comprising an area of 21,087 sq. km. Mizoram is a very hilly terrain rich in its vast variety of flora, of which many are used for medicinal purposes. Nature has bestowed it with beautiful green valleys and high blue mountains. Mizoram has a lovely climate cool in summers and cold during winters. It is also the home of numerous rivers, streams and brooks criss-crossing the mountain ranges. |
The Mizos are believed to have immigrated from Mongolia centuries ago. Their festivals, or `Kuts' as they call them, have interesting names like Pawl Kut, Chapchar Kut and Mim Kut. The British influence came to Mizoram towards the latter part of the 19th century, when most Mizos turned towards Christianity, though there are a number of Buddhists and Hindus too. For the traveller in search of natural beauty, Mizoram offers charming lakes like Tamdil and Palak as well as the lovely hill station of Champhai. And, for the lover of wildlife, there are the Tawi and Dampa sanctuaries. |
