Periyar (Thekkady)

Thekkady, 253 kms from Thiruvananthapuram and 192 kms from Cochin, is the home of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Centred around an artificial lake, the sanctuary is about 800 sq km. Earlier known as Nellikampatty Sanctuary and established in 1934, the sanctuary was enlarged in 1950 as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

The evergreen forests are an excellent natural habitat for elephants, the gaurs or bisons, sambhars, barking deer and mouse deer. Periyar is also a botanist's and an ornithologist's' dream.

While the nearby airports are Thiruvananthapuram (253 km), Cochin (192 km), Madurai (144 km) KTDC also conducts tours from Thiruvananthapuram.
