Port Blair is the capital and the gateway to the Andamans by sea and by air. It is a small town with a leisurely lifestyle, and a pleasant holiday destination. But, there is more beauty lying in wait beyond, and the place can be used as a base camp to explore the rest of the islands.

PLACES OF INTEREST

More often than not the first stop for tourists is the Cellular Jail — a grim reminder of British colonial rule when Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned here and tortured almost always to death. The building with 698 cells is now a national memorial to those who sacrificed their lives for India's independence.

EXCURSIONS

Viper Island is a small island just at the harbour, and was infamous for being a prison for convicts. It has the ruins of the hilltop tower which had the gallows. Today it is a beautiful picnic spot.Ross Island a small island close by and part of a day’s trip from Port Blair, it is a

crumbling reminder of the British settlement. Having established a settlement at Port Blair, the British chose this small island as an exclusive haven for themselves. They built their bungalows, churches, clubs, tennis court, ballrooms, swimming pool, everything. But all this was destroyed in an earthquake about 50 years later - in 1941. This was followed by World War II and the Japanese occupation, to come into the Indian Union finally after Independence.

Today the tropical forests grow unchecked and undisturbed, finding their way into every nook and corner of the ruins. Ross, as they say, is inhabited only by ghosts of the past - and the nimble deer, the peacocks and the tropical vegetation.

Overnight stay on the island is not permitted.

The Underwater World of the Andamans is absolutely fascinating. The clear blue-green waters of these islands house some of the world’s most beautiful corals, shells and a fantastic variety of fish.

Day trips can also be organised to some other uninhabited islands like Jolly Buoy, Redskin, and Cinque which are excellent for swimming.
