The erstwhile capital of the great Magadha Empire, Rajgir, or Rajgriha (meaning the Home of the Kingdom) is intimately connected with the life and times of the Buddha, for the Lord delivered many celebrated sermons in the garden of Veluvana which was gifted to him by King Bimbisara.And it was here in the Saptaparni Cave that the first Buddhist Council was held shortly after the Buddha's death. |

ACCESS Rajgir is an 11 km drive from Nalanda. Nearest airport Patna, 102 km away. Connected by rail to Bakhtiarpur. PLACES OF INTEREST Rajgir has a Venu Vana (Veluvana) Vihar and a beautiful temple constructed by the Most Ven. Fuji Gurujee, President of Nipponzan Myhoji, at the original site of Venu Vana Vihar built and donated to the Buddha by King Bimbisara in the 6th century B.C. There is also a lovely Japanese temple on the Gridhrakut Hill. In addition, there are the ruins of the Saptaparni Cave and the probable site of King Bimbisara's jail which has been enclosed by a stone boundary. Incidentally, Rajgir is an important place of pilgrimage for the Jains also, because Lord Mahavira spent 14 years here.
