Tripura

Tripura is a small state situated in the north-east of India, with Bangladesh bordering it on almost all sides. It has a population of about 2.8 million (1991 census) of which 29 per cent comprise 19 tribes.  Yet untouched by the ills of modernization, the state offers excellent scenic beauty by way of its lovely green hills and mountains, thick verdant woods, and clear rivulets murmuring their way down.

  Tripura

Tripura is also famous for its many old temples and other monuments. For thirteen centuries it was a princely state and old, ruined monuments are a reminder of its ancient heritage. In fact, the origin of the state is believed to go back to the days of the Mahabharata.

About 56 km south of Agartala is situated the famous temple of Tripura Sundari, built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya about 450 years ago and believed to be one of the 51 `pithas' recorded in Hindu scriptures. Other important temples include the Jagannath Temple, Uma-Mahadev Temple, Buddha Temple, and Chaturdasa Devta Mandir. Colossal rock-hewn figures at Unakoti, 200 km from Agartala, are an amazing sight.

The royal family of Tripura had always been a keen patron of art and culture. King Bir Chandra Manikya was the first to recognize young Rabindranath Tagore as a great poet in the making, and Shantiniketan owes its birth partially to the support extended by the royal court.
